Hipertensi merupakan faktor risiko terjadinya penyakit kardiovaskuler,
seperti penyakit jantung, penyakit arteri perifer, dan stroke. Berbagai upaya perlu
dilakukan untuk menangani penyakit hipertensi, salah satunya melalui diet. Susu
mengandung kalsium dan peptida yang berperan dalam penurunan tekanan darah. Di lain
pihak, susu juga mengandung natrium, lemak jenuh dan kolesterol yang dapat
meningkatkan tekanan darah. Akibatnya, timbul kontroversi bagaimana peranan susu
terhadap kejadian hipertensi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan oleh Wijayanti (2007) Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Diponegoro mengenai "Hubungan Konsumsi Susu dengan Kejadian Hipertensi" menunjukan hasil adanya hubungan konsumsi susu dengan kejadian
hipertensi. Pada analisis bivariat diperoleh nilai Rasio Prevalensi (RP) konsumsi susu
terhadap kejadian hipertensi sebesar 0,41 (95% CI: 0,18 ; 0,94). Analisis multivariat
menunjukkan bahwa variabel-variabel yang mempunyai hubungan bermakna dengan
kejadian hipertensi adalah konsumsi susu, asupan kalium, dan usia. RP konsumsi susu
terhadap kejadian hipertensi sebesar 0,18 (95% CI: 0,04 ; 0,82).
Sehingga dapat disimpulkan dari hasil penelitian tersebut bahwa "Konsumsi susu merupakan faktor protektif terjadinya hipertensi"
